Street Fighter and Tekken to Cross Paths

street fighter x tekken

Fight your rival! Street Fighter and Tekken are stepping into the ring once more, this time against each other! Today at San Diego’s Comic-Con, Capcom and Namco have announced Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter. Here’s a pro-tip so you don’t sound silly around those in the know; the “X” is pronounced as “cross”.

street fighter x tekken 1

Capcom’s Street Fighter X Tekken I going to look and feel like Street Fighter IV, binding combatants from both titles to the 2D platform that the World Warriors have practically created. Super moves will return, and SFxT will also borrow the tag system from previous crossover fighters. Tekken X Street Fighter, in the other fist, is a fighter in the 3D realm. One can only assume that, as the title is being developed in Namco Bandai’s house, the controls will be more familiar to Tekken players.

street fighter x tekken 2

Though it’s still far too early to announce the roster of either game, Street Fighter alums Ryu and Chun-Li as well as Tekken all-stars Nina Williams and Jin Kazama have been revealed in teaser images. The promo trailer shows perhaps the two figureheads of each fighting franchise coming face to face…after poor Dan once again serves as the whipping boy of the World Warrior tournament. Could Dan appear in the final version of the game, or was he simply shown to give Jin a +1 in badassery?

street fighter x tekken 3

Fighting fans will have plenty on their plate, as the Marvel vs. Capcom and Mortal Kombat series are resurrected early next year. Another revitalization comes in the form of Street Fighter III, as Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition was also announced at Comic-Con. Forget Focus and practice that Parry!

    E3 2010 Lineup

    e32010

E3 2010 is almost here, which means anxiety levels are high over at 360 Rant Rave. Do we have everything we need? What are we wearing? Can we get to each appointment on time? Should we stop in and check out Leonard Nimoy? These and many more questions run through our heads, but perhaps chief amongst all these queries, is how we will pay for it all.

Don’t you fret, for we’ll figure it all out somehow. We’ve got a gameplan set up on the new forum (which should go live once the diligent Jolly gets the style and chat in place), so we’ll not be spending our first E3 looking like chocobos with no heads. The funding, however…well, we won’t turn down donations ;)

Here’s a list of who is bringing what to the video game potluck going down in just a few days:

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Leaks Details and Trailer!

    mvc3

You might want to sit down for this.  Fresh out of Captivate 2010, MvC is causing quite a stir after a decade of inactivity.  The latest installment of the crossover series gets a nip and tuck in the visuals department, powered by the same engine behind Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2.  The ground combat that returned in Street Fighter IV plays a smaller role as MvC3 once again launches combat to another level with aerial combos.  Is the one-on-one format getting stale?  Three versus three returns in all its glory, letting players send in teammates for Assists just as they did so long ago with MvC2.

So who’s returning to the roster of combatants for the new crossover installment?  Iron Man, Wolverine, Ryu, The Hulk, Morrigan, and Resident Evil’s Chris Redfield have been confirmed through MvC3: Fate of the Two Worlds media blurbs. If you look at the above image, however, you’ll notice many silhouettes of other unannounced fighters.  Gameinformer believes that they have the right of it, suggesting that the shadows belong to Marvel’s Hawkeye, Captain America, Dr. Doom, Deadpool, Thanos/Magneto, and Capcom’s Felicia, Chun-Li, Sheva Alomar, Albert Wesker, and Frank West.  Joystiq deviates a bit in their shadow interpretations, proposing that some of the secret characters are Dante, Viewtiful Joe, and Super-Skrull.

This is what’s known thus far, per Gameinformer:

Important Marvel vs. Capcom 3 facts:

    • MvC 3 will be coming to PS3 and 360 in Spring 2011. No arcade version is being planned.
    • It’s being developed in house by Capcom, and they’re working closely with Marvel to ensure they do both fictions justice.
    • Capcom is striving to make the game deep while reducing confusion controls. They wish to open the door to newcomers. There are hints of inspiration from Tatsunoko vs. Capcom in the gameplay.
    • It utilizes the same MT Framework engine found in Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2, allowing the amazing visuals seen in the trailer above.
    • Staff responsible for previous Marvel vs. Capcom titles are on it, including Ryota Niitsuma.
    • They are striving for a “living comic book” appeal, so they’re really playing up shaders. Even more so than in Street Fighter IV.
    • The roster will be somewhere in the 30s.
    • This version of Wolverine is from Astonishing X-Men.
    • Story in MvC 3 will be the best in the series, but takes a backseat to the fighting.
    • It will be playable for judges at E3 this year.

    Finally, the official press release:

    Marvel vs Capcom 3

Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, and the legendary Marvel Entertainment, LLC today announced the latest installment in their epic fighting game series with Marvel® vs. Capcom ®3: Fate of Two Worlds.

Fill the shoes of legendary characters from the most beloved franchises in entertainment as you battle in the first VS. Fighting game powered by Capcom’s MT Framework.

“We are so pleased to be working with Marvel again. Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 Confirmed!

    mvc
Capcom decided not to wait until E3 to confirm the rumors of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, opting to make the big announcement at their own annual Captivate event in Hawaii.  According to some moles planted by Planet Xbox 360, the disc-based release will be a gorgeous 1080p and will feature such returning favorites as Wolverine, Spidey, and Magneto out of an impressive roster of combatants.  Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is even purported to play like a mashup of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Street Fighter IV.  Rounding out the forbidden info, the game is rumored to see a release late this year or early next year, and attendees of E3 210 will be treated to an early hands-on.  More details should emerge next week. And even more details will emerge at 360RR during E3, where Jolly and I will be in attendance!

Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2 was announced at Captivate…though that’s about it. Again, watch for our E3 coverage to see if anything substantial regarding this title emerges from the expo. Lost Planet Planet 2 and Dead Rising 2 also appeared at Captivate, but these too were overshadowed by the huge MvC3 confirmation.

So what do you think of Marvel vs. Capcom 3? Considering the previous entry in the series still sells for $20 to well over $100 per condition and platform, and due to the popularity of the game’s presence in the XBLA family, the upcoming MvC3 is going to be a force to reckon with for Capcom’s rivals.

Super Street Fighter IV Released Date Pushed Back

    capcom
According to a Capcom release that surfaced yesterday, there might be some bad news for gamers anxious for the Street Fighter IV facelift.  G4tv pointed out that Super Street Fighter IV, Lost Planet 2, Monster Hunter 3, and Dead Rising 2 might be subject to a delayed release for “strategic reasons”.  This delay would mean that the aforementioned titles could now fit into the window of Capcom’s fiscal 2011, or April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011.

Much like the movie industry rearranges releases in order to avoid stiff competition, Capcom proves that the video game industry displays similar tactics.  Don’t be surprised if Capcom sends out most of its heavy hitters a little later than expected.  Sadly, the waiting game is all-too-familiar to gamers.

Super Street Fighter IV Presents 4 New Modes of Play!

    ssf4
Slated for a March 23rd release and $40 price tag, Super Street Fighter IV has been a game that has stirred up many speculations and rumors since this year’s Tokyo Game Show. A recent scan of Youtube, however, reveals a bit more substance for the upcoming fighter. Four new game modes will make their appearance in the new chapter of Street Fighter IV…and the term “new” is used loosely:

    Team Battle
    Replay Channel
    Endless Battle
    Bonus Stages

Team Battle presents the opportunity for 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4 matchups, a mode made popular in the recent Versus crossover fighters. The Replay Channel allows players to record, watch, save matches or watch matches of their own or from other players around the world. Endless Battle pits one player versus another, with the loser rotating to the end of line while the winner stays to play the next up. Bonus Stages present the successful return of a Street Fighter 2 fan favorite, bringing back the destroy-the-car/barrels-before-time-expires intermissions.

As the video points out, players waiting for their turn in online multiplayer will be able to watch the active players duke it out, bestowing the option to either strategize accordingly or take a bathroom break.
