Gamer – The Future Of Gaming?

Jack Thompson is gonna have a field day with this one…

Imagine yourself in the not too distant future.  Gaming technology has evolved to the point where you can control your in-game character via an advanced VR-style interface, where your character will mimic your actual body movements and respond to your thoughts.  You can jump into a match with other gamers and engage in a shooter/deathmatch-style game for victory.

So what’s the rub?  This is no video game.  The upcoming movie, Gamer, depicts a world where gamers take over and fully control the actions of their in-game ‘characters’ who are actually death row inmates hoping to survive and gain their freedom.  Their game is called Slayers.

It’s vaguely reminiscent of the 1987 movie, The Running Man, staring Arnold Schwarzenegger.  The inmates on death row are given a choice – stay where they are and wait for their date of execution or join the game and take their chances.  If they can survive 30 rounds without getting killed, they’re free.

Of course, nobody has ever survived the 30 rounds necessary for freedom.  Go HERE to see a preview video for the movie.

Boy, talk about a ‘murder simulator’, ‘eh?  Personally, I hope gaming never, ever gets this realistic.  Great graphics & motion control and all are fine, but please let’s never get to a place where we use other humans as our playthings in deathmatches.

Game on!
